Ask Dr. Orloff
How do I break up with a narcissist?
Question Dear Dr. Orloff,
I have been in an off and on relationship with a narcissistic man for over 10 years now. Every time I leave him he keeps reeling me back in. I really want to move on with my life. How can I make a final break from him?
Answer: Dear Anna,
This is one of the hardest things to do. Narcissists can make you fall so hard in love with them that it feels like you're giving up a part of your heart to leave them. Nevertheless, they have no empathy, nor can they really love. So you must leave them cold turkey and endure the pain. You must set limits and say "no" to them and in your heart. They are enticing and know how to reel you back it, but gather all your strength and keep walking into the unknown towards something better. The better you can understand the nature of a narcissist the easier it is to recognize how he is manipulating you. Read the section on narcissists in Emotional Freedom and watch the video below.
