How do you live with someone who brings your energy down?

Question: I do activities every day to bring my energy up, but don’t look forward to going home. How do you protect yourself in such close quarters or is the only solution to move out of the home?

Answer: Great question. In “The Empath’s Survival Guide” I go into detail about how to not absorb the stress of family members or others that you live with. It may be challenging at times for empaths to live with other people. They often take solace in their own company and require lots of alone time. So, when you live with a challenging person take alone time as much as you can where you can go into another room and close the door. There you can meditate and come back to yourself.

In addition, practice breathing out stress and negative energy. Also practice the “bubble technique” from “The Empath’s Survival Guide” where you visualize a protective bubble around you. If it is possible to talk to this person about boundaries please do so. For instance, “I love and appreciate you but it would be so wonderful if you can give me more quiet time when I come home” or ask them lovingly to limit their talking because you are needing silence. Please check out all the suggestions in the book to help you with this situation. If someone is abusive, it may be the healthiest decision to move out. In general, consider all the factors and listen to your intuition so you can make the best decision.

Judith
