The Genius of Empathy:

How to Stop Absorbing Other People’s Energy

Empaths and highly sensitive people are extremely attuned to others and the world. They feel everything and tend to absorb the stress of crowds, coworkers, loved ones, and even strangers. In this practical and educational talk, Dr. Orloff, an empath herself, shares how sensitive people can find balance and become empowered empaths. Empathy without boundaries is self-sabotage. Participants will learn how to set boundaries and hold space for those we care about without taking on their pain. The secret is to find balance as a sensitive person and learn strategies to avoid absorbing other people’s stress.

Based on her book, The Genius of Empathy, Dr. Judith Orloff, a UCLA-trained psychiatrist and NY Times best-selling author, will discuss strategies on how to stop absorbing the energy of others and protect yourself in your relationships, family, work, and from the negative voices in your own head. Participants will learn practical steps to avoid becoming overamped or depleted.

Research has shown that emotions can be contagious; you can potentially “catch” fear, anger, or joy from people without realizing it. It’s vital for sensitive people to know how to avoid taking on an individual’s physical and emotional pain. Also, chronic anxiety, depression, or stress can wear down your defenses. Suddenly, you become hyper-attuned to others, especially those with similar pain.

In this Live Online talk, participants learn how to:

  • Stay centered
  • Set healthy boundaries
  • Listen to their body and intuition
  • Identify draining people and how to cope with them
  • Heal emotional triggers, release resentments, and negative energy they absorbed
  • Say no to oversharers and narcissists
  • Take in the positive, nurturing energy of nature and people
