Ask Dr. Orloff

How can I be on spiritual path and still get involved with an abusive relationship?

Question: Dear Dr. Orloff,

As a highly sensitive "lightworker," I never thought I would end up in an abusive relationship, but I did. Wish I'd read about splitters in your book, Emotional Freedom before because it is right on. Now I feel my energy, my ability to do my work, and to help myself and my children heal has been...compromised. So, on an energetic level, how does one heal one's self and help their children to recover from the trauma and other damage so we can be even better than before?
Portland, OR

Answer: Dear Susan,

My view on life is that our primary purpose is to develop our souls. Every person we meet along the way, loving or not, is meant to help us grow. Do not beat yourself up for getting involved with an abusive relationship. But please learn what you can from it, including setting healthy boundaries and saying "no" to abuse, so you don't repeat this lesson again. It is very emotionally freeing to heal any draw to abusive people so you can love more in your life and be clearer in your work.
